The Redmond Bike Derby is said to be the world's longest-running criterium, or single-day bicycle race on a circuit road course. The race began in Redmond as a way to raise money for downtown Christmas decorations and school athletic equipment. It started as the “Redmond Bicycle Derby” -- a race around Lake Sammamish by local newspaper boys Charlie Lentz and Ray Adams in which locals could bet on the winning time. 

Over the years the event has seen many changes. The Derby has had festival queens, motorcycle races, fire department water fights and even a street dance; but the bike race has remained at the center of this annual event. 

Interestingly, since the first race in 1939 the event has been held every year, except in 1942-1945 during World War II and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
