About the Event

The "Now & Then" photo-comparison column has run in The Seattle Times' Sunday magazine since January 1982. Historian Paul Dorpat shouldered that delightful duty for 37 years, with Jean Sherrard joining him in 2004, before Sherrard and Clay Eals took it over in 2019. Writing and illustrating 430 words a week sounds simple; it rarely is. Procuring "Then" images, gathering subjects for "Now" shoots, chasing reliable information, then chiseling it all into a concise narrative—laborious work, but decidedly a labor of love. After briefly introducing the column's origin and format, Jean and Clay will alternate, each telling the inside story behind a published column, with Eastside stops along the way. They'll also talk about Paul himself, the underground publisher and concert promoter who became Seattle's unofficial historian. Join us for an insider's view of this beloved long-running column.
