Derby Days Historical Facts

August 24, 1939 marked the first Redmond Bicycle Derby – a 25-mile grind around Lake Sammamish. The first race was inspired by racing paper boys Charlie Lentz and Ray Adams. Spectators wrote down their guesses at what the winning time might be, with the closest guess winning $25.

This list was compiled by Historian Naomi Hardy and shows our Derby Days Timeline. The timeline shows the Queen, race course, and any special events. Except for four years (1942 to 1945) during World War II, the race has been held each year.
